Batteries – No matter what type of disaster you’re expecting, batteries are a “must.” You can use these for your nebulizer, a small fan, or simply for your child to play a video game while he rests on the couch.

Bandages – You probably have some of these on hand, but make sure you have large and small bandages available for small wounds.

Gatorade – Think your little one might catch the flu? Minor ailments can quickly become deadly if your child gets dehydrated. Keep a few bottles of Gatorade, Pedialyte, or any other sports drink on hand. This will help keep your child hydrated if he becomes nauseous or starts vomiting.

Children’s medications – While you might not normally use Tylenol, keep some on hand just in case you need it. Eye drops and nasal spray can also be beneficial.

Vitamins – If your child takes a daily vitamin, keep an extra bottle in your emergency kit.

Essential oils – Did you know that essential oils can be a fantastic way to beat minor ailments? Lavender oil can be used for headaches and anxiety, while OnGuard is perfect for helping to heal minor colds and strep throat. Additionally, you’ll need to have clove essential oil available to help heal toothaches.

Coconut oil – This can be used for toothpaste, sunburns, and a variety of other skin ailments. You can even swish coconut oil in your mouth to help with canker sores, cold sores, and sore teeth.

Save-a-Tooth – If you haven’t already purchased a Save-A-Tooth Preserving System kit, now is the time. Should your child knock a tooth out, this will help save it until you can get to a dentist. Contrary to popular opinion, placing a tooth in milk or water won’t save it for long. Investing in this kit is a much better option. Consider keeping one at home and one in your car, just in case.

Gauze – If someone at your home gets cut, scraped, or otherwise injured, gauze is a “must.”

Ice packs – Get some instant ice packs for minor problems, sprains, and fractures. You should also keep a few ice packs in your freezer. Even if you don’t end up needing them, they’ll help preserve your frozen foods.

Battery-operated nebulizer – While pricy, these are important for families with an asthmatic. Having a nebulizer could help save your child’s life if he has an asthma flare-up during a power outage. Even if your child doesn’t have an asthma attack, a nebulizer can be a fantastic help for children with bronchitis or croup. (Note: You’ll need a doctor’s prescription ahead of time to get the medication for a nebulizer.)

Antibiotic ointment – Always have a tube of this available for cuts.

Sterile gloves – You can pick up a box of sterile gloves at any pharmacy. Use these anytime you’re dealing with blood or cuts to keep your child safe and clean.

Tweezers – The last thing you want to deal with is a tick or splinter when you can’t get medical assistance. Tweezers will enable you to deal with these issues quickly.
